Rev. Dr. Thomas Parayadyil
Proto Syncellus, Syro Malabar Eparchy of Great Britain
Fr Thomas Parayadyil, a priest of the Missionary Society of St Thomas the Apostle was born as the second child of Mariam and Thomas Parayadyil on 15 March 1949 at Thidanad. After his High School studies at St George’s High School, Aruvithura he joined The Missionary Society and was ordained on 19 March 1973. Almost two years he worked in the Diocese of Ujjain. Then he was sent for higher studies which he completed in 1980 with a Doctorate in Liturgy from the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome in 1980.
On his return he was appointed professor of Sacred Liturgy at St Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Aluva. When the Missionary Society started their major seminary in 1986 he was appointed the first Rector of Ruhalaya Major Seminary at Ujjain. He was asked to join the staff of St Ephrem’s Theological Seminary at its beginning in 1992. From 1993 – 1998 he was Vicar General in the Diocese of Ujjain and parish priest in the Cathedral. He left Ujjain when he was elected the Director General of the Missionary Society of St Thomas the Apostle for a term of five years. After the term of service as the Director General he was sent to the Sangli Mission Region of the Missionary Society in the state of Maharashtra.
In 2007 the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Bishops approved and sent him as the Coordinator of the Syro-Malabar migrants in the United Kingdom. On 1 December 2013 the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales appointed him the National Coordinator for the Syro-Malabar faithful in England and Wales. Now he is serving the newly erected Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Great Britain as the Protosyncellus.
